Prof. Mário Costa, Instituto Superior Técnico Lisboa (Portugal)
Mário Costa is a Full Professor in the area of Environment and Energy at the Mechanical Engineering Department of Instituto Superior Técnico. He graduated in Chemical Engineering at University of Coimbra in 1984, obtained his PhD in Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College London in 1992 and his Habilitation in Mechanical Engineering at Technical University of Lisbon in 2009. Currently, he teaches the courses of Thermodynamics, Combustion and Renewables Energies. He has supervised 10 Postdoc, 18 PhD, 83 MSc and 35 Diploma students. He has participated in more than 50 national and international projects in the area of Energy and Environment and has (co-)authored 1 book, more than 140 papers in international peer-reviewed journals, more than 180 papers in international conferences and given more than 40 invited lectures at other universities and international symposia. Currently, he serves as Associate Editor of the Proceedings of the Combustion Institute and belongs to the Editorial Board of the Aerospace, Combustion and Flame, Energy Conversion and Management, Energies and Energy and Fuels. He was the recipient of the Caleb Brett Award of the Institute of Energy in 1991, of the Sugden Award of the British Section of the Combustion Institute in 1991, of the Prémio Científico Universidade Técnica de Lisboa/Santander Totta in 2010, of a Menção Honrosa Universidade de Lisboa/Santander Universidades in 2016, and of Prémio Científico Universidade de Lisboa/Santander Universidades in 2017.
Prof. Daniel Chemisana, University of Lleida (Spain)
Topic: The role of optics in building integrated photovoltaics
Daniel Chemisana is Full Professor in Applied Physics and Coordinator of the Mechanical Engineering degree at the Polytechnic School of the University of Lleida, where he leads the Dynamic Systems Applied to Solar Energy (SDAES) research group. He teaches Physics, Renewable Energies, Environmental Technologies and Renewable Energy Resources in Mechanical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Building Engineering, Agricultural and Food Science degrees and Master in Industrial Engineering. In addition, he participates in several Masters in Renewable Energies at other universities giving lectures about Optics for Solar Concentrating Systems. He has supervised 56 BSc/MSc and 8 PhD students. At present he is supervising 5 BSc and 5 PhD students and mentoring 3 postdocs. He conducts research on physics applied to solar energy since 2006, focusing on Concentrating Optics, Photovoltaics, Hybrid Photovoltaic/Thermal collectors and Building Integrated Photovoltaics. His research has been internationally recognized as demonstrated by over 100 papers including 75 in JCR journals and, in addition, he holds 3 patents. He is co-author of several international book chapters published in the most prestigious editorials as Taylor&Francis, Elsevier or Springer. He participates in several national and international projects in the field of Solar Energy. Moreover, he is reviewer of more than 20 international journals in the field of renewable energy and optics, associate editor of IET Renewable Power Generation and chairman and scientific committee member of several international conferences as Eurosun or the International Conference on Concentrator Photovoltaic Systems. In 2019 he was recipient of the prestigious ICREA Academia award.
